Practice Background

Portsdown Group Practice covers the whole of Portsmouth from postcode PO1 to PO8.  It is within easy reach of the South Downs National Park, the New Forest, the Isle of Wight and some of the most beautiful countryside in the country, with numerous and varied leisure opportunities. Portsmouth is located in a vibrant area with a wide range of facilities and excellent transport links, with London only 90 minutes away by train.

We are a 6 site Practice with a total list size of 44,000 patients.  We have 13 Partners, 8 Salaried GPs, 8 Nurse / Paramedic Practitioners, a comprehensive Nursing team and other associated health practitioners. We are an active training practice.

Team Members

Our organisational structure includes a Management Team, based at Kingston Crescent (Group Business Manager, Operations Manager, Business Intelligence Manager, Finance Manager, Nurse Manager and Management Support Team) and a surgery team at each site.

Our Practice Nursing team is overseen by our Nurse Manager and consists of 8 Nurse / Paramedic Practitioners, 12 Registered Nurses, and 8 HCA’s. They offer all nursing related services from chronic disease management to dressings and phlebotomy.

The practice has a long history of training – we train GP registrars and student nurses.

We are committed to the ongoing development of the entire team, including mandatory and developmental training for all our staff.

The main purpose of the role is to assist the management team in the day to day management of the operational and data side of the practice.  Your normal day will include the following, however, the role will develop as you learn more:

  • Answer the telephones promptly and in a pleasant manner.
  • Assist the Operations and/or Business Intelligence team in data collection and analysis
  • Assist with human resource administration
  • Assist with promotional materials and fundraising activities.
  • Pass on all messages to doctors, clinical, practice and attached staff when taken.Either via SystmOne or email.
  • Complete any relevant admin tasks as necessary, i.e. – scanning, retrieve\file patient notes, plus any other tasks associated with the Quality Outcomes Framework and Enhanced services
  • Respond to all queries for assistance from doctors, clinical and practice staff and patients.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings.
  • Actively take part in internal\external training as requested.
  • Complete workbooks as required to complete NVQ3 in customer Care
  • Follow all Health and Safety guidelines and policies in the surgery and inform the H&S lead of any infringements.

Future prospects are excellent, we can offer a varied role with good exposure to all elements of business administration. This will stand the candidate in good stead for progression.  There are regular vacancies within the practice and whilst we cannot guarantee a position after the apprenticeship, it is likely that  opportunities within the practice could arise, should the candidate wish to apply.
Things to consider, we are a six site practice covering the whole of Portsmouth.  The role is based at our Kingston Crescent Surgery in North End.  However, there may be times when travel to other sites is required.  This will not be at short notice and travel will be reimbursed.  We are a doctors surgery and therefore the successful candidate will need to be highly mindful of data protection and confidentiality.
