Apprentice Vehicle Technician
Whites Motors, Southsea
£6.40 an hour, 8:30am-5:30pm Monday-Friday with an hour lunch, 40 hours a week. If over 18 years of age there will be an alternating Saturday shift 8am-12pm

Whites Motors has been a family run garage in Southsea since 2001. We are an authorised MOT test station and carry out repairs (brake, tyres, exhaust, cambelts, diagnostics and engine repairs) and servicing to all makes and models.
 
The role will involve assisting the MOT testers with their MOT routine this will help you to learn where vehicle controls are and standards expected for an MOT. You will assist and shadow other members of staff in servicing, repairs and tyre replacement. You will also be expected to carry out workshop maintenance to ensure workshop cleanliness.
 
During the apprenticeship you will witness and assist with air conditioning, repairs, servicing, engine diagnostics, engine management, fleet maintenance, MOT testing and mechanical repairs.
Day to day responsibilities will include general cleaning and tidying, shadowing other technicians to understand servicing routine, tyre replacements and other repairs as required. 
 
Job responsibilities will increase depending on your wiliness to learn and abilities of being able to clearly follow instructions.

Qualifications
Maths or English at GCSE 9-4/A*-C or Functional Skills Level 2, with the other subject with grade GCSE 9-3/A*-D. The subject with grade 9-3/A*-D will be upskilled to gain a Functional Skills Level 2. Proof of certificates is required.
 
The above are entry requirements of the apprenticeship. The apprentice can study to gain a Functional Skills Level 2 in maths OR English, however the requirements needed for the education cannot allow classes in both subjects.
 
What does the programme include?
This apprenticeship will focus on light vehicle diagnostic processes, fault finding and equipment as well as industry relevant skills and training for example apprentices will practice:
  • Inspecting Light Vehicles using prescribed methods
  • Maintaining a healthy and safe workplace, including the maintenance of key equipment and carrying out general housekeeping
  • Use specific company IT systems within the workplace, including Point-of-sale systems and hand-held devices.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues
  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability
On completion of this Standard the Auto-care Technician will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or if they wish as an Associate Member. They would also gain entry onto the IMI Professional Register.

What attendance is required?
Attendance at College will be required on weekly on a Monday. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week. Your assessor will liaise with you to set up mutually convenient times for consultation and assessment visits at your place of work.

It is a Government requirement for you to spend 6 hours a week working towards your “Off the Job Learning” – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching.

Learning and assessment
Apprentices build a portfolio of work and work place assessors will be in regular contact to provide support, and to arrange on-site visits to observe the apprentices’ ability and skills in their daily role. It is important for the apprentice to take ownership of their own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. The apprentice’s final grade will be determined by the collective assessments known as “the end point assessment” and has a Pass/Distinction grade.

The three assessments are:
  • Online knowledge based tests
  • Skills test (knowledge and behaviours are observed in the workplace)
  • Professional discussion (apprentice is to demonstrate that they can apply the broad range of knowledge, skills and behaviours in the Standard)
Future prospects
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, and subject to progress as an employee, we would like to offer you a full time job. Qualified technicians will be given the opportunity to go on to become MOT testers and enrolled on further courses.
