The Service

The Development Management Team is part of the Planning Service and is in the Planning and Regeneration Section.  We are based at the Town Hall Offices and are the Local Planning Authority dealing with the majority of planning matters for Gosport, working with elected Members through the Planning Board.  We are committed to delivering regeneration and appropriate development within the town, enabling it to meet present and future needs whilst improving the environment and everyone’s quality of life.   Through our services, activities and processes we engage with businesses, the wider community and elected Members.  As a service we take pride in our work by valuing others, focusing on what's important so that we make a real and positive difference.  If these values reflect how you are and how you work then this could be the role that meets your expectations.

What is the role?

Within this role you will be reporting to the Development Manager but on a day to day basis you will be managed by the Business Support Supervisor as well as working with other business support officers, planning and enforcement officers and other officers within the Council. You will learn how to assist planners in the registration and processing of planning applications, appeals and enquiries using our systems and administrative processes.  You will assist with application publicity and consultation, receive and bank fees. You will also obtain information from our documents and records using specialist software and communicating results to a wide range of customers.  You will input data into our systems and interrogate this data for information to answer enquiries. You will also provide technical support to the Planning team to enable the provision of an efficient and effective service to all of our customers.

What we can teach you:

  • What Planning and Regeneration does and its role across Gosport
  • How local government works
  • How to carry out different types of analysis of information
  • How to use information to support facts and draw a conclusion
  • How to obtain information from others
  • How to communicate with customers and colleagues
  • How to contribute to a successful and close working team in delivering a key service for the Council

What you will achieve:

  • Knowledge of how to plan your work and time management skills to meet deadlines
  • Negotiation and persuasion skills including communicating in a business environment to all levels of staff and managers
  • Satisfaction that you are making a positive contribution to how the organisation works
  • Knowledge and skills to further your development

Who is the person?

  1. Positive, motivated, willing to learn, thorough, responsible, committed and who understands the importance of accuracy, confidentiality and discretion.

In addition you need:

  1. Good IT skills and be familiar with MS office including Word, Excel & Outlook
  2. Good numerical skills.
  3. Good written communication skills as many of our enquiries are through written communication needing written responses.
  4. The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English.
  5. To be a team player, able to fit into the current team and willing to help out as needed.
