CLC are a privately-owned maintenance company offering their clients national coverage with a local service. We began as a small painting contractor in 1969 growing steadily into the thriving refurbishment and maintenance provider we are now, with over 14 branches nationwide and a turnover of more than £128million.

Due to company growth a vacancy for an IT Support Apprentice has arisen within our IT Team at our head office in Southampton. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start a career in IT and gain experience at entry level.

You are computer literate with a keen interest in technology and a methodical approach to problem solving. You will be responsible for answering incoming requests for computer support via phone and email. A large proportion of the role will be to provide end user support, often 1st Line, mainly by phone with remote support connectivity.

Daily Responsibilities

  • First point of contact for IT Support by phone and email
  • Logging issues within helpdesk ticketing system, progressing or escalating as required
  • Face to face and remote troubleshooting of technical issues which can be hardware and software based
  • Installation, configuration and updates of company hardware and software
  • Asset management
  • Documentation
  • Communicating with third party technical teams to resolve issues with third party software and services
  • Compliance with company policies with respect to confidentiality and safeguarding of data and personally identifiable information

Overview of the role

  • The support scope of the CLC network is currently 350 users (desktop/laptop). This is likely to continue to grow at a steady rate. There are over 550 Mobile devices in operation (iphones/ipads), again this number is growing.
  • CLC has 18 permanent office locations throughout the UK.
  • The IT team has 3 full time staff members, the IT Manager and 2 Systems Administrators.

  • CLC’s network is a managed MPLS provided by our Managed Service Provider Claranet.
  • CLC has 2 key IT locations, the Southampton head office and a Virtual Data Centre hosting platform provided by Claranet.

  • A*-C/9-4 in GCSE Maths and English or the Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent.
There is no college attendance. Due to this, applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating maths and English GCSE/Functional Skills results will not be considered.
Course breakdown
The apprenticeship qualification lasts for 18 months and formal training usually takes place every 1 to 2 months, this will include 5-10 day release whereby the apprentice will be required to attend dedicated training.
Students will be taught using our online learning platform giving the freedom to attend virtually from anywhere. Due to being a virtual apprenticeship the training can be completed at home, in the work place or at our college campus in Cosham in a computer room and would be agreed with the employer. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week
How do you achieve the apprenticeship?
The apprentice will need to successfully complete all stages of the apprenticeship standard. This includes: -
  • Completion of all five Knowledge modules covering 20% off the job training
  • A portfolio of evidence containing real projects carried out within their workplace
  • An employer reference
  • Completion of a business-related project over a one-week period
  • A structured interview with an independent assessor
Apprentices are independently assessed at the end of their programme to achieve the Apprenticeship at a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade.
What qualifications can be achieved?
Upon successful completion apprentices will achieve the overall qualification, BCS Level 3 Infrastructure Technician Apprenticeship.  In addition to this qualification, students can also gain: -

  • ITIL Foundation v4
Apprentices will be recognised by the British Computer Society (BCS) for entry onto the register of IT Technicians, confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence. 
Future prospects

Things to consider
All applicants are requested to bring valid right to work documentation to their interview.
You will be entitled to five weeks’ holiday per year, plus statutory bank holidays; one week must be taken during the Winter shutdown. The other weeks may be taken at your convenience with the proviso that only two weeks may be taken consecutively and that you liaise with other staff to ensure no overlap of holidays. All holiday must be authorised by your line manager in advance. After 5 years’ service, you will be entitled to an additional day’s holiday for each further completed year of service, up to 10 years, giving a maximum holiday entitlement of six weeks.

Following 3 months service all new employees are subject to the auto enrolment statutory provisions currently applicable. The Company operates a defined contribution pension scheme, which you will be eligible to join on completion of 12 months’ employment with the Company. However, before you can do so you must opt out of the statutory arrangement. Full details of the statutory scheme and the Company scheme can be obtained from the Finance Director.

Life Assurance

The Company provides Life Cover during your employment until you reach State Pension Age. Full details can be obtained from the Financial Controller.

Bonus Scheme

The Company operates a profit sharing scheme, which will ensure that you share in the success of the branch for which you work. Bonuses are discretionary dependent upon profitability, effort and commitment. Bonuses are paid in November and the following May in respect of the trading year to 31st December.  Employees become eligible to be considered for the bonus scheme after 1 years service.
