We are a preschool and nursery provision, we take children from the age of 6 months old to 4 years old. We currently have 85 children on role at the setting. We are a small team of 12 people who offer our children a warm, secure and safe environment. We recognise children's varied abilities, interests, needs and learning styles.
We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic person who can provide quality learning opportunities, activities and sensory play for the varied age range of children who attend the setting. Play underpins development across all areas of learning by providing a challenging and rich environment children will remain motivated to learn.
 
You will plan play experiences for individual children, building upon their strengths, interests and culture. You will work alongside the parents building a positive foundation for their learning, growth and development.
 
Day to day you will be involved in:
  • Preparing healthy snacks and supervising meal and snack times
  • Toilet/nappy change
  • Supervise and engage in play activities with the children, supporting and extending their learning and development
  • Participate in and plan small and whole group activities
  • Supervise outdoor play/learning
  • Encourage positive behaviour
  • Assist or lead story and song sessions
  • Liaise with parents about home routines, home learning, behaviour, development
  • Record any observations on the on-line learning journal for parents to review.
Main duties will include:
  • Oversee and participate in children’s activities including planning and observation
  • Devising stimulating activities appropriate to ages of the children and maintain children’s records
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, healthy and safe environment
  • Be responsible for own key group of children supporting their learning and development, planning next steps of learning and identifying any additional support that may be needed
  • Adhering to all nursery policies and procedures including safeguarding
  • Carry out any other duties reasonably required by the Nursery Manager.
Personal qualities
 
We require someone who is enthusiastic, warm, caring, and passionate about Early Years Education. You must be flexible and begin to show that you can work on own initiative.
 
Skills
  • Good understanding of children’s needs 
  • Good written and verbal communication
Experience - desirable however not essential
  • Working in a childcare setting
  • Knowledge of the EYFS
Qualifications

GCSE 9-4/A*-C in English and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both

Due to the demands of the role the employer has advised applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating GCSE maths and English/Functional Skills/equivalent results will not be considered.
 
Desirable qualifications

 What does the programme include?
  • Planning and supervising child initiated and adult led activities which are based around the needs and interests of each individual child
  • Supporting children to develop numeracy and language skills through games and play
  • Key person responsibility to help ensure each child feels safe and secure
  • Observing each child and shapes their learning experience to reflect their observations
  • Meeting the care needs of the individual child such as feeding, changing nappies and administration of medicine
  • Working in partnership with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals to meet the individual needs of each child
  • With additional experience, an Early Years Educator can become the manager of an early years setting
  • Individuals will undergo all the checks as per the EYFS requirements to ensure suitability to work with children.
What attendance is required?

Attendance is required at all college sessions to ensure you meet off the job requirements (see below). Visits to the workplace will be arranged between yourself and your Apprenticeship Assessor.
It is a Government requirement for you to spend 20% of your apprenticeship working towards your “Off the Job Learning” – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus a number of other tasks (more information can be shared).

Learning and assessment

This apprenticeship is taught through a blended approach, this means you will attend sessions at the college and online, this will be one day a week. You will learn through a mix of college-based sessions, work-related activities, independent study and research. Assessment is on a continuous basis with a number of assessments in each unit. Assessments take a variety of forms, such as written reports, assignments, witness statements, observations and professional discussions. You will also be required to contact a longitudinal study which your Apprenticeship Assessor will provide more information and guidance on when you start.

Alongside the CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) you will be required to develop a portfolio of work to showcase how you have met the knowledge, skills and behaviours standards. Your Apprenticeship Assessor will guide and support you through this process and arrange on-site visits to observe you demonstrating the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours in your daily role. It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. Your final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment.

Portsmouth College and Highbury College have merged to become the City of Portsmouth College. This apprenticeship will be registered under the Highbury College apprenticeship banner, with teaching and learning support from Portsmouth College. 
 
Future prospects
 
Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship and subject to progress as an employee, and business needs, Little Sunbeams Pre School like to offer you a full time job.
