The Flying Bull Academy is an academy in the heart of Portsmouth, proud of our caring ethos and striving to support our children to achieve their full potential.

As a new Apprentice you will join our expert team in the Early Years department working with the Nursery Class Teacher to provide support to individuals and small groups of pupils in the classroom. You will contribute to planning and preparation of indoor and outdoor learning environments and resources that create a safe, vibrant, fun and engaging environment for learning.  

Your role as an Apprentice Nursery Nurse will be a very busy and rewarding. With the ability to learn and follow detailed instructions from the Nursery Class Teacher, you will build good relationships with pupils and colleagues. You will need to be able to work as part of a team and independently putting the needs of the pupils first.

Duties of the role
  • Work with individuals or small groups of pupils in the classroom under the direction of the Nursery Class teacher
  • Support and take an active role in the planning, preparation and delivery of teaching for pupils in the Nursery Class, including the use of ICT in the classroom
  • Support the teacher in managing behaviour and implementing specific interventions to support the learning of pupils in the Nursery Class
  • Support pupils in their social and emotional well-being, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate and in line with academy policy
  • Contribute to plans for the preparation of indoor and outside learning environments and resources, and ensure areas are clean and tidy after use, creating a safe, vibrant and engaging environment for learning
  • Support the Nursery Class Teacher in making and recording observations and assessments which lead to improved pupil progress in line with academy procedure
  • Support children’s learning through play and teacher led activities, based upon the EYFS curriculum, meeting the diverse needs of individual children
  • Contribute to plans for and participate in educational off-site visits
  • Assist pupils with eating, dressing and hygiene, including toileting, as required, whilst encouraging independence.
  • Provide appropriate advice and support to parents, carers, guardians and external organisations to ensure the needs of children moving to a primary school have been robustly assessed and that pupils and parents, guardians, carers have a positive first year experience.  
  • Attend weekly planning meetings and training sessions as required to contribute to the enhancement of the Nursery provision.

Desirable experience
  • Completion of Level 2 Early Years Practioner, course or apprenticeship
  • Successfully engaging pupils with a range of differing needs and starting points and enhancing their progress
  • Previous experience of working with children in a nursery or similar environment
  • Able to write observations and keep clear records which contribute towards the EYFS profile
  • Able to change and adjust learning activities to improve pupil progress and address any misconceptions
  • Working knowledge of a Primary school
  • Current knowledge of the EYFS curriculum and assessment
  • General awareness of current national policies relevant to child protection and health and safety within a primary school environment
Qualifications
GCSE 9-4/A*-C in English and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both, proof of certificates is required

Due to the demands of the role and ratio in the setting, applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating GCSE maths and English/Functional Skills/equivalent results will not be considered.

What does the programme include?
  • Planning and supervising child initiated and adult led activities which are based around the needs and interests of each individual child
  • Supporting children to develop numeracy and language skills through games and play
  • Key person responsibility to help ensure each child feels safe and secure
  • Observing each child and shapes their learning experience to reflect their observations
  • Meeting the care needs of the individual child such as feeding, changing nappies and administration of medicine
  • Working in partnership with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals to meet the individual needs of each child
  • With additional experience, an Early Years Educator can become the manager of an early years setting
  • Individuals will undergo all the checks as per the EYFS requirements to ensure suitability to work with children.
What attendance is required?

Attendance is required at all college sessions to ensure you meet off the job requirements. Visits to the workplace will be arranged between yourself and your Apprenticeship Assessor.
It is a Government requirement for you to spend 20% of your apprenticeship working towards your 'Off the Job Learning' – off the job learning can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring, and coaching – plus a number of other tasks (more information can be shared).

Learning and assessment

This apprenticeship is taught through a blended approach, this means you will attend sessions at the college and online, this will be one day a week. You will learn through a mix of college-based sessions, work-related activities, independent study and research. Assessment is on a continuous basis with a number of assessments in each unit. Assessments take a variety of forms, such as written reports, assignments, witness statements, observations and professional discussions. You will also be required to contact a longitudinal study which your Apprenticeship Assessor will provide more information and guidance on when you start.

Alongside the CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) you will be required to develop a portfolio of work to showcase how you have met the knowledge, skills and behaviours standards. Your Apprenticeship Assessor will guide and support you through this process and arrange on-site visits to observe you demonstrating the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours in your daily role. It is important for you to take ownership of your own learning by seeking out opportunities to gain new skills on the job with the employer. Your final grade will be determined by collective performance in the three assessments in the endpoint assessment.

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)

Portsmouth College and Highbury College have merged to become the City of Portsmouth College. This apprenticeship will be registered under the Highbury College apprenticeship banner, with teaching and learning support from Portsmouth College.
