As part of a team of colleagues providing accountancy and business services, you will be trained in the ‘engine room’ of our business. This role will be exceptionally exciting to a candidate looking to enter the accounting world and become involved in a wide range of business support functions, whilst studying for their AAT qualification.
No previous experience is required for this post, we are offering full training to the right person who is enthusiastic and eager to learn.
Key responsibilities
- To provide excellent client care both on the phone and in person. This will include answering incoming calls, greeting clients and welcoming them into the office, offering them refreshments and showing them in and out of the building.
- To complete bookkeeping tasks, using mainly cloud based accounting packages such as Xero, Quickbooks and FreeAgent with support and supervision from the Book-Keeping team.
- To utilise internal recording systems and follow internal procedures to ensure work is recorded and completed to a competent standard.
- To work effectively and efficiently as part of a team.
- To develop a professional skillset by shadowing colleagues to learn wider business skills and take the opportunity to interact with a variety of business clients.
- To maintain electronic filing of books and records.
- To participate in activities necessary to support the smooth running of the office environment.
- To willingly undertake any other tasks as reasonably requested by line managers and comply with all employee policies and procedures of Heelan Associates.
- In addition significant on the job training will be provided to the successful candidate across a large range of day to day accounting tasks.
Skills
- Good standard of verbal and written English

Qualifications
GCSE 9-4/A*-C in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both. Proof of certificates is required.
Due to the demands of the role the employer has advised applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating GCSE maths and English/Functional Skills/equivalent results will not be considered.
If you hold a Level 2 AAT Certificate or verifiable knowledge, a discussion can be had about moving straight onto the Level 3 apprenticeship.
Course breakdown
The apprenticeship will need you to attend classes at college one day a week for the length of a full college day, which you need to commit to. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week. It is a Government requirement for you to spend a minimum of six hours a week off-the-job – off the job can consist of college attendance,coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching.
Apprentices are independently assessed at the end of their programme to achieve the Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship at a Pass or Distinction grade.
- Synoptic Test (3 Hours on a College PC – 40%) Covering: IT Systems/Processes, Standards, Reporting, Analysis, Comms, Problem Solving, Quality and Accountability within a Financial Accounting Environment.
- A portfolio and reflective discussion (60%) showing evidence of knowledge, skills and behaviours while within the workplace had met required standards.
Standard Level 2 AAT Exams after each individual unit.
Future prospects
The candidate will have the opportunity to progress to a full time permanent position with Heelan Associates following successful completion of the apprenticeship, should operational conditions allow.
