TaxAssist Accountants
Purbrook - on a main bus route between Portsmouth and Clanfield (route 8)
£6.15 an hour, Monday-Friday with an hour lunch (see hours under 'Things to keep in mind'), 37.5 hours a week
This apprenticeship will start in September, employment will commence beforehand
TaxAssist are a firm of Accountants in practice with eight staff, dealing with tax and accounts on behalf of SMEs, landlords and private individuals.
We are looking for an apprentice who is ambitious to become an accounting technician working in practice. The role will include training in book-keeping, VAT, accounts preparation, personal tax, Corporation Tax and practice management. You will assist with all aspects of the work of the practice under the supervision of and support by the other members of the team.
Initially you will work on basic book-keeping using QuickBooks Online and Xero, greeting visitors, assisting with new client setups and billing for completed work. You will progress to VAT and tax work as your knowledge and experience builds up.

Qualifications
GCSE 9-4/A*-C in English and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both, proof of certificates is required
Due to the demands of the role, applications with less than the required grades will not be considered. Equally, applications received without stating GCSE maths and English/Functional Skills/equivalent results will not be considered.
If you hold a Level 2 AAT Certificate or verifiable knowledge, a discussion can be had about moving straight onto the Level 3 apprenticeship.
Course breakdown
The apprenticeship will need you to attend classes at college one day a week for the length of a full college day, which you need to commit to. Time spent training will come under the working hours per week. It is a Government requirement for you to spend a minimum of six hours a week off-the-job – off the job can consist of college attendance, coursework, project related work, employer training, mentoring and coaching.
Apprentices are independently assessed at the end of their programme to achieve the Assistant Accountant apprenticeship at a Pass or Distinction grade.
- Synoptic Test (3 hours on a College PC – 40%) Covering: IT Systems/Processes, Standards, Reporting, Analysis, Comms, Problem Solving, Quality and Accountability within a Financial Accounting Environment.
- A portfolio and reflective discussion (60%) showing evidence of knowledge, skills and behaviours while within the workplace had met required standards.
- Standard Level 2 AAT Exams after each individual unit.
Future prospects
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, and subject to progress as an employee, we would like to offer you a full time job. Previous apprentices have gone on to senior roles within this practice, other practices and external organisations such as the NHS.
Things to keep in mind
- Hourly wage is negotiable dependant on experience
- Regular reviews based on work experience and college results
- Flexible working with core office hours being 9am – 3pm. Office closes at 4-5pm, however closing time can vary due to business needs.
